Forester Diesel

Forester diesel headed to US in 2010

In early 2007 Subaru announced it is building a 2.2-liter flat-four turbodiesel engine, which will go on sale in Europe this year in Impreza and Forester models, but is not ready for the US. During the announcement of the engine at the 2007 Geneva Motor Show, Subaru indicated they had no plans to introduce the diesel to the US market.

Fuji Heavy Industries president Ikuo Mori says the U.S. is the most important market worldwide, and executive vice president of Subaru of America Tom Doll says “Forester owners enjoy long road trips”, begging the question of when the engine will be available in the US for the Forester and Impreza.

“We are preparing to launch the engine when the market is ready,” says Mori, “We have no comment on when that would be. The European market is ready now; I’m not sure when the US market will be.”

However, Mori says that regardless of the market condition, the engine will be introduced to the U.S. by midyear in 2010.

Mori says he thinks it will be very difficult for the U.S. to achieve the 15 percent diesel passenger car sales penetration by 2015, a figure that supplier Bosch as well as Mercedes-Benz and Audi have agreed with. Still, he added that Subaru will introduce the engine in the U.S. well before the US market reaches that level of diesel sales.

The New Subaru Forester Diesel

Available in three models, the Forester X, XC and XSN.

Step inside a Subaru Forester, and you’ll know. It was built with a commitment to On and Off-road vehicles, driven by the spirit of innovation. A focus on ingenuity that generates control and exhilaration. Design that appeals to the heart as well as the mind. All delivering an experience behind the wheel that is even more fulfilling than the destination.
This is not just another diesel evolution - this is a revolution. This is the world's first horizontally-opposed diesel engine to be featured in a passenger car. This is the SUBARU BOXER DIESEL. Mounted on the legendary Symmetrical AWD system, it benefits from the key characteristics of low-vibration and highly responsive acceleration. Boasting minimal inertia and friction with mountains of torque, this package changes all preconceptions you may have had of diesel engines. Its perfect balance and low centre of gravity will ensure you of an outstanding driving experience with unrivalled stability on every journey.

The boxer diesel is essentially an all-new engine, sharing its bore centers with Subaru's 3.0L gas six (to help reduce machining costs) but otherwise made mostly of unique parts. The twin-cam, four-cylinder mill displaces 2.0L, feeds off a common-rail fuel-delivery system, and breathes via 16 valves and a variable-nozzle turbo. Output is 145 hp at 3600 rpm but the engine makes a manly 258 lb-ft of torque at just 1800 rpm (compared with 226 lb-ft for the Forester's 2.0L turbo gas engine).

Subaru notes several advantages to the boxer's design. Most important, the horizontally opposed configuration is naturally balanced, requiring no weight- and friction-increasing counter-rotating shafts for smooth spinning. The engine is extremely compact, thanks to a bore pitch reduced 6mm over the 2.0L gas engine. An aluminum block minimizes weight, while a low-mounted turbocharger helps drop the car's center of gravity. The engine also wears a diesel particulate filter (DPF), a closed silicon-fiber honeycomb that traps particulate matter as it passes through the exhaust.

Mated to the new engine is a new six-speed manual transmission designed especially for the boxer diesel. Subaru currently has no automatic capable of handling the diesel's lofty torque output, and given the relatively low volumes anticipated for the diesel the company isn't inclined to spend big bucks on creating a new one. Expect the manual to be the one and only transmission offering when (if?) the Forester diesel eventually makes its stateside debut.

Official EPA fuel economy figures of course aren't yet available, but in Europe the Forester 2.0D is rated at an amazing 37 mpg city/highway combined. If you're a driver who likes to pour on the miles, here's your rig: With its 16.9-gallon fuel tank, the 2.0D has a range of more than 600 miles. Got a boat or a trailer? No problem. With the tank-like boxer-diesel, the Forester 2.0D can tow up to 4400 lb (compared with just 2400 lb for the gasoline-drinking, turbo 2.5L four in the Forester XT).

The engine lights off with a pushbutton starter and settles into a subdued clatter. You know right away it's a diesel, but the sound from beneath the hood isn't intrusive. Pull away from a stop and in a blink the turbo spools up and you're surging ahead. This isn't a quick car by any means: Subaru claims a 0-to-62-mph time of 10.4 seconds. Instead, think "stout." On an incline, the diesel powers up without fuss or undue shifting. On the autobahn, it hovered along at 90 mph with a refined thrum.

  3. I am praying that Subaru makes the Forester diesel with manual transmission available for the North American market soon! I am ready to buy one as soon as it is available. It is the perfect match for my needs - fuel economy, towing power and precise control.

  4. I am dying to get my hands on one of these! Please, oh please Subaru, bring 'em over here quick!!! I will buy it today!

  5. We need and want to buy one if the clunker bill is signed (two 10+ year old cars here)!! Please, please, please bring these here asap so that we can take advantage of this option! Otherwise, I will have to go knocking on the less dependable VW's door and I will deeply miss the AWD. :(

  6. I have cash! I hope Subaru is listening???
I want a white one, leather seats, sunroof and 6 speed manual!

  7. C'mon Subaru - bring the boxer diesel Forester to the USA, and as quickly as possible. The longer you wait, the more the American public will resign themselves to TDI's or wimpy hybrid/electric appliances. Yes, subtantial market penetration will be tough, but the sooner you get the boxer diesel to market, the better your chance of penetrating. If your sales and operating executives don't have the torque to do it, find some people who do. Thanks in advance (I hope) for finding your torque.

  8. Argh! I really want one of these. I wish there was more data on when they'll be available and how to pre-order.

  9. Please get them into the US. The market is ready and you will sell them

  10. yes, how about the diesel in a small truck? There is a huge market for people who use a truck as a primary vehicle, but never tow anything, but haul furniture and similar small items. Why are all trucks gas hawgs?

  11. Familiar with diesels for over 30 years...I am ready to buy a new technology diesel in car form now....STOP THE TEASE, SUBARU........comfort,power, economy, towing and utility is the car that is needed NOW in the US auto/SUV vehicle market. Take the lead and run with it..sjn

  12. Bring on the 2.0D - AWD for poor midwest weather, towing capacity, great gas mileage - I'll take 2 right now!

  13. with the new forester looking more like a mini-me tribeca I am more inclined to buy one... Now add the diesel and 4400lb tow cappacity and fuel milage out the wazoo!!! Sign me up.

  14. Many of us are looking for an AWD vehicle that gets over 35 mpg--and the manufacturers are playing a game of self fulfilling prophesy in that if they dont sell diesels, they'll never find out that there is a BIG market in the US for diesels. If Audi-USA didn't keep VW from selling a diesel Tiguan here then VW wouldn't be able to make enough of them. Subaru is missing a tremendous market opportunity to be the first to maret and dominate the market for lack of competition (as well as a great vehicle!). Bring it on--I'm waiting (as others have said) money in hand.

  15. Where can I buy a Forester diesel. I live in USA, CA.
    Thanks,

  16. Put the diesel in the Impreza or Outback and I'll sign up. (Forester has grown too big for my tastes) I'm looking into TDI Jettas/Rabbits(next year?) but would prefer to stay with my trusty Subarus. Well Subaru? I've got no more than 12 months left in my Prism before a new car is in the garage - its going to be a diesel, will Subaru give me an option?

  17. In 2005 diesels overtook gas-powered cars in sales in EU. What is arguably biggest shift in power-plant use, much bigger then the move to a fraud called hybrid, the whole story was muted in US. Some more expensive cars will be available in Diesel version in US, but "regular" (read mass-produced in a sense of say Corolla or Forester) nope. There are too many special interests to prevent that. I'd buy a small (non-turbo please) 6-speed 65MPG+ car in a heartbeat. But none is available and it never will be. Bigger cars are more profitable, hybrid, although being total fraud, is also more profitable then diesel. Sheeple in US have an access to a much more credit then sheeple in EU, if nothing else then through the use of their homes as ATM machines, so they can be suckered into the "larger and safer" vehicles. The move to vehicles which consume 40% less fuel would obliterate profits of oil cartel in US.
But.. we'll continue to be spoon-fed meaningless PR statements like this one about Diesel Forester... To Subaru's credit, others are doing it too. Yawn....
Watch for Subaru Hybrid to came sooner then TDiesel!
What is interesting is that PR statements of all car manufacturers look the same, same statements, same (in)actions same lies. Like they are controlled from the same source...

  18. I have heard that Subaru will NOT be bringing the diesel to the US anytime soon. They do not believe that we will pay the extra $4000 over a gasoline version model.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I thought I was going to be first in line, but it looks like there's a lot of competition....

The Forester has swollen, and is now about the size of my wife's Highlander. I'm keen for the diesel, but in an Impreza or Outback. Also, the reviews from Edmunds are not encouraging - hard to shift, stunningly slow off the line and with poor road feel. This vehicle will probably need an aftermarket chip to bring in the turbo boost at much lower rev's. I'm staying in line for the vehicle, but it's ok by me if my Impreza lasts through 2011.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Is an american spec forester non-california compliant out there to import. I live three time zones away from california and do not want to pay for the parts I do not need. To exclude 3/4 of the worlds largest market is stupid!!!!! I guess they would rather have all of nothing.

  21. I am ready to put down my money and buy one to replace my PZEV 08. I want better mileage, NOW!
Don't hold out on us any more Subaru! While you're at it, offer the diesel in both the Outback and Tribeca to expand my choices! I think a diesel is a much more sane solution than hybrid technology

    ReplyDelete
  22. My next vehicle will be diesel or natural gas powered, even if I have to buy a VW. I really like my Outback and hope to stay with Subaru. I don't think many people here in Wyoming are going to buy a prius because of all the snow, wind and long distances between towns. Subarus are much better suited. Subaru, Please bring us diesel!!

    ReplyDelete
  23. I, too, am dying to buy a diesel Forester. Please, Subaru, bring the diesels to the U.S.! A diesel Forester is my ideal vehicle, and I'm ready to buy!

    ReplyDelete
  24. Please, Please, Please bring the Forester diesel to US soon - you will sell them like no other Subuaru or AWD vehicle as the combination of AWD, torque, and fuel economy would be worth a few extra dollars!!

    ReplyDelete
  25. Would it be legal to buy one across the pond and have it shipped stateside?

    ReplyDelete
  26. I want a Diesel Forester to replace my Mitsubishi Outlander V6. But if Subaru is thinking $4000 above the gas engine, they can KEEP it. VW only charges about $1200 for the Diesel option.
Diesels are available in Europe in the Outlander,HondaCRV,ToyotaRAV,Forester and more.
I just think that we Americans are not educated enough when it comes to Diesels.
If you doubt this, question a few of your friends and neighbors and see some of the stupid responses you'll get.

  27. It's confusing. Diesels are flying out the showroom doors. Hybrids just sit there. I tried to buy a VW sportwagen till the stealership tried to gouge me 38% over MSRP.
I say SCREW CAL! Bring me the diesel you already have. I'm 2 time zones away and it's perfectly fine with our DOMV to register the vehicle. I've got cash. So why the tease?
Honda backed out, no 52mpg Accord stationwagen ( sport tourer ) for us. Ford wimped out, decided the 4.4 liter diesel in the range rovers was too good for the F150s. Dodge welsched on Cummins, so no 5.0 liter diesel for the Ram 1500. GM.... no balls. Just like a cows tail, swings whichever way the wind is blowing. Mahindra & Mahindra? Delays, delays, we'll see the four door 30 mpg midsize diesel pickup..... when? Sept? Dec? Never?
Come Fuji, step up. How about this. The Forester starts at 20 grand are runs up to around 30. So take the true difference ( not 4000 ) say 2500 as a deposit. In two months send over as many as you have deposits on. Simple. We can build them online and the cars will be sold before they ever get loaded on the container ship. I'll even pick mine up at the dock. Just land in Seattle instead of California. And before anybody screams about the 'poor' stealerships, The dealership law does NOT extend all the way to japan. There is no law against me buying a car in japan. They'll have my earnest money. I back out and it's thiers. If not I pay the balance when they deliver the car and hand me the title and the keys at the dock.

  28. Although happy with my thirsty 08 Legacy, I would absolutely love to trade up to the new Outback diesel! Just make sure to offer it with an auto tranny! Thanks Subaru!

    ReplyDelete
  29. I'm in the market for a car now. I won't buy a 2009 Forester due to the 4-speed tranny. I would buy the diesel (at a premium price) with the 6-speed manual if it were available today.

Is this even a possibility, or a marketing tease? My current set of wheels won't last forever.

    ReplyDelete
  30. It's about time. I had an 86'Isuzu Trooper II Turbo Diesel with a 5-speed and 4WD (with low range). I averaged 32 mpg, 23 years ago! The engine was great.

I'd happily buy any diesel with AWD. Subaru, sign me up.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I had a '98 Outback that I traded in on an '05 Outback that I traded in on a used '04 VW TDI. Once someone has driven the torque of a diesel engine, most will never want another gas engine. The *lowest* MPG I have ever got on my VW has been 31 MPG, all city miles, in the summer with the AC on and driving like an idiot. I normally get 36 mpg or higher. It's really nice to only have to fill up every 600 miles.

VW has issues, but if you want diesel in a car, there you are... (I also have a Dodge CTD). I know when Subaru brings out their diesel, it will be better. I promised my Subaru dealer I would buy a diesel Subaru when they came out. I will keep that promise as soon as Subaru provides one.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Please add me to the number of Americans seeking to purchase the new Subaru Forester diesel w/6 spd transmission. My daughter and son-in-law want one as well. I like the milage and towing capacity, she needs the AWD and torque to hall clients into the N. GA mountains to show property. Come to think of it, my brother understands the benefits of diesels and will need a replacement for his Audi also. That's a total of three (3) more units! Come on y'all let's get the goods over here while the Cash For Clunkers program is still viable... PLEASE!!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  33. I am prepared to buy a diesel Forester, but do not care for the lack of communication and indifference exhibited by Subaru in informing us when and if it will be available. I was a satisfied Subaru customer until they started playing 'games'.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Look into the availability of a VW TDI! Good luck finding the one you want because in most cases they are sold before they are even delivered. It's hard to say that market penetration is tough for diesels when we don't have many resonable choices available.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Why wait till 2010? Bring it over already.

    ReplyDelete
  36. So all this interest but no car? Anyone heard when it is coming and what are they waiting for? Maybe trying to sell off all the small 2009 Outbacks? patience. I can wait till Jan. 2010 but will I really be able to get one then?

    ReplyDelete
  37. How about offering a automatic transmission with your Turbo Diesel. If Volkswagon can do it why can't Subaru. Have had 3 Outbacks would prefer staying loyal to Subaru but automatics are a most.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I have three subarus currently. All have over 175,000 miles on them, including my beloved 1981 brat. We need to upgrade at least one of them pretty soon and are patiently waiting, waiting, WAITING for a diesel forester or outback to hit the market here.! Make either available and I will definitely buy one!

  40. I am a diehard Subaru fan, but am driving a Jetta TDI right now because Subie doesn't offer a diesel in the USA. I'll be first in line when the do!

  41. Still waiting on the diesel Forester 6-spd...Come on Subie...don't delay, I'll buy two.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Take your time. After waiting for two years (for the U.S. market to be ready for diesel, whatever that means) I gave up and bought a gas powered AWD rig. Maybe in 10 years, when I'm ready to buy again, you'll have one available! No hurries.

    ReplyDelete

  45. While I find the attention to the supposed diesel appealing, it seems the more talk about it the less likely the probability. Lets's see, a 50mpg,lively,towing capable,AWD, dependable station wagon. Perfect vehicle for a retiree to drive off into the sunset, while tromping through a 6 speed tranny. Too good to be true? Let's see. DJP

    ReplyDelete
  46. patiently waiting? Heck no. Bring it NOW!!!!! Volkswagen has this field all to themselves. If they had AWD I'd already own one. Audi- BMW, forget you and your $50,000 screw mobiles. AWD Subi 50 mpg. I got cash, what's your probelm Fuji? You don't like money? What DO you want? Booze, Broads, WHAT???? What do we have to do to get a decent vehicle in the USA?????

I pull a 10,000 pound trailer and get 18mpg and low 20"s empty hwy, my wifes 07 subaru wagon gets 23 mpg We need diesel ASAP!!! And wait and see the aftermarket add on's

  48. I'm ready to buy a diesel.....will buy the VW jetta TDI wagon..but will hold off and instead buy a Forrester diesel...c'mon subaru..get on the diesel wagon

    ReplyDelete
  49. I've had three Subarus. The 1990 Leg went 273,xxx miles with hardly a glitch. The others were not that far behind. So I have no doubt in their ability to produce a serious clean diesel. Come on Subie, if VW can plough through the line of endless money grabbers doing their best to keep new technology out, I'd believe you could do it as well. Imagine an AWD Boxer Diesel getting well into the mid to high 40 MPG...! Add to it the longevity, pulling ability...Then Go after the market share BMW has. A small super efficient sport type auto...look up the 1 series diesels...Amazing machine. Use this Boxer Diesel for everything its worth. Shoe horn it i(as an option) into every car you've got.

  50. For us diehard SVX fans resurrect the SVX with the boxer diesel and 6 speed.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Don't let VW be the only Automaker that makes small diesels for cars in the U.S.! Bring it over here Subaru and I'll buy it! Impreza 2.0L Diesel would be sweet.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Add me to the list....Come FHI!

    ReplyDelete
  53. Good to see the thread is still alive; I had sort of given up on the whole idea. They would sell 1000 of these to wicked smaht Vermontahs in about a week. Hello? Is anyone listening? Is there anything more formal we can be doing besides blathering anonymously on this page? September 2010 would be just about perfect.

    ReplyDelete
  54. I don't know how much longer I can wait for this bad boy to arrive. I have been back to test drive the VW TDI now twice and am so tempted but I want the Subi AWD TDI. I will hold out until the spring and if its not here by then I will buy the VW TDI.

    ReplyDelete
  55. 98% of the time, it's just me and maybe one passenger. So I want fuel economy all of time. But sometimes it's deer season, or I need a sheet of plywood, so I need to tow a small trailer and need a little torque -- can't get that with a hybrid -- they won't even put a trailer hitch on them. (Is a diesel hybrid different?) I want the smallest, most fuel-efficient machine to meet my day to day needs, but one that can occasionally haul some big or messy stuff in a trailer. Clearly, the best option is a car with a small diesel engine. The Outback wagon (or a Ford Focus) with a diesel engine would be perfect. The Forrester has gotten too big. I'm guessing that a whole lot of people would agree with me.

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  65. I am not a Subaru customer, but I would definitely become one if they offered a 5 or 6 speed manual, AWD diesel! The American auto market is driving me nuts! 66. I want one now now now now........

  67. I wonder if they are able to meet the Tier 4 emission standards - that could be the big hold up. Will they be able to have a design that does not require urea injection? Also - what will be the maintenance on soot filters or other diesel specific items? In principle I really want one of these more so than anything else on the market, I absolutely love my current Forester and would like a larger version even more.

I have been holding out waiting for the past 2 years. I also wonder if they will do something stupid like void the warrenty if you tow with it. If they give me 3000lbs of towing capacity and the fuel savings can justify the cost difference and maintenance is not outrageous I'll be the first one with cash in fist. Both my cars are getting near their end of life - so I would be looking at two - but maybe not at one time. I wish FHI would at least give us an update. If they said - no we decided not to import it or it will be a few more years, I would buy a gaser Forester (but only 1). As it is now - I am in limbo with everyone else, just waiting and growing impatient with their silence.

  69. I hear mid 2010 for Diesel Boxer release date? Oh man, my 93 legacy wagon has 257,000 miles on it. My goal is 300K! This should(hopefully) be right as the Diesel is on the market! Yay Subaru!!!

    ReplyDelete
  70. I think Subaru is missing a golden opportunity to capture a foothold in the diesel market. I've been looking hard at the Forester for about a year and I would love the diesel option.... and the manual transmission. Why can't you get the limited package with a manual? Some of us really like to drive a manual and you can't get with the gas turbo.

    ReplyDelete
  71. I too desire a diesel with a 6-speed manual transmission. I hope they offer these options in both the Outback and the Forester. If not introduced in 2010, I'll buy a Jetta Sportswagon TDI. My preference is for the Subie. It is clear from this thread that there is a large market for the Subaru diesel.

    ReplyDelete
  72. Info I got from Subaru when I emailed them about the diesel. I to am waiting.

Thank you for your interest in Subaru products. We have not yet definitively announced when diesel powered models would be available in the US.

Early last year, Fuji Heavy Industries (FHI), our parent company introduced the world's first turbo diesel boxer engine for sale in European markets in the Legacy and Outback model lines. We then introduced diesel powered Impreza and Forester models in Europe late last year. Mr. Mori, FHI Chairman, had indicated early last year that U.S. diesel models should be available States-side in the next few years.

    ReplyDelete
  73. Hello Subaru Team....we are ready to purchase a Diesel Forrester as soon as you make them available in the US. Stop teasing the public with European debuts etc. We (the US) is desperately in need of such a vehicle now!!!

  75. I am still driving my 1999 Grand Caravan waiting for a manual, diesel Forester. I avoided trading in during the "clunker" offer hoping to buy the Forester that I want. The 1999 is having some minor mechanical issues so I really need Subaru to hurry with my diesel Forester!

    ReplyDelete
  76. I am still driving my 2000 Forester which has just over 100K. As soon as the diesel 6 speed Forester is available, I'm there with cash in hand. I just wish FHI would stop teasing us with their silence.

    ReplyDelete
  77. Bring it now! My two 93 legacy's combined have 560,000 miles on them and I am waiting on on eof these to replace them!

    ReplyDelete
  78. Like all the rest of you, I'd love to own a new Suby diesel. Currently have an Outback Sport because the mileage, but would prefer a Forster, Legacy or Outback with a 6 speed manual diesel!

    ReplyDelete
  79. I think the american car manufacturers influenced the powers that be,(lobbyists)so diesel car emmissions are very strict because they have nothing to throw at this market. And so not take away from their cheaply made poor mileage gas car sales figures. Regardless the consumer pays the price for not being able to buy what they really want.

    ReplyDelete
  80. If SUBARU does not come through with a diesel vehicle for the US in the next 10 months, I am switching my brand loyalty to Honda or Toyota or??? etc...
It's time you make available a real car here, Subaru. Listen to your true customers and get with it!

  81. Looks like Subaru could sell every one they sent over here- I'd buy one in a heartbeat. I suspect it's the SIERRA CLUB (and their ilk) that is keeping diesel out of the US- If we Americans discover a more efficient way to burn fossil fuels, their goal of removing them as an option suffers a major setback!

I used to build airplanes and we sold them all over the world. Where can I place my order, Subaru? Is someone trying to protect us from getting too many miles per gallon?

  100. All of these auto makers are making me sick as they continue to launch new diesel options in world markets EXCEPT for the USA! Even Hyundai is now launching the 2010 Santa Fe with diesel around the world but not in the US. Why??? We have money and we're willing to spend it RIGHT NOW! Americans are eager for fuel efficient diesel engines without having to sacrifice the size of their vehicles to get great MPG efficiency! No we don't want hybrid crap, we don't want batteries and we don't want vehicles that plug in to charge! We want an engine that provides torque, gas efficiency, and longevity (diesel) without worrying about rechargeable batteries to replace down the road when they fail. There is a huge market to tap into in the US this very moment and whoever gets into the market first with a diesel product DONE RIGHT is going to score some major cash and will send the competition scrambling to come up with a comparable product to thwart the loss of profits. It's time for diesel competition in the USA!

  105. Let's face it people....we, the Common People are being held hostage by a gaggle of Professional IDIOTS at FHI, Bayrische Motor Werk, DETROIT, and TOKYO........there are BILLIONS to be made and they sit on their hands in a Bill Gates like Zen Master hands folded pose, while we suffer financially and await crumbs from "our masters' tables"!!!!!

I say NO MORE! I'm starting my research on buying the diesel engines over in Europe, having them shipped to Canada, and then picking them up there! Just bring 'em back in a pickup bed, the Half Ton 4x4 Pick Up Bed which will then have a New Diesel in it!!!!

This is the only way we can go people! Our 'masters' are too enamoured of pulling our strings like puppets, and DETROIT STILL has their heads so far up their butts that daylight is NOT an option. They are Control Freaks and that's the bottom line..........regain your own control people and do what I'm gonna do....buy NEW ENGINES and put them in my existing rigs......I'm tired of waiting and will no longer look for 'crumbs' from the 'masters' tables.'

  108. I have read some posts from owners across the pond. It appears the emissions system will work something close to the TDI, no urea tank.
Also have read that it may require an expensive synthetic oil. I am less concerned about that if the change interval is long. Hopefully they have the US emissions requirements under control and will launch here soon. My dealer says that they don't think it will happen, but they want to sell me a car now. I can wait, my current subie is runs great and my other car although in need of replacement can last another year or two if required.

  110. Dear Subaru, I currently drive an FX35 and want to purchase an Outback diesel. How many times must you hear this before you pull your heads from your rear ends and realize that change is here and that we americans....ESPECIALY those of us who purchase Subaru are more than ready to purchase your products with a diesel engine. By not bringing these to the states you are simply pissing off your potential customers. I am ready to buy, I have owned an outback previously, would purchase a diesel outback TOMORROW if you would only deliver. In fact, I would purchase two of them. Instead I will be looking at the BMW x-5 diesel because you idiots in executive management cannot get your collective acts together. This lack of foresight and intellegence frankly worries me about the brand. You have been gaining market share in the US in 2009, become complacent and see what happens. The first AWD wagon powered by a fuel efficient diesel will win big time.

  115. Diesels cost too much, it is a $4000 option in the Jetta and Golf and would take 8 years for it to pay for itself if diesel cost the same as gas but as of writing this it is about .50 more expensive and this is the reason they are not going to bring it here. And they always offer diesels in the most expensive trimlines and never in the base model increasing their cost of ownership.

The best argument would be for the towing capacity.

Until they can make diesels cheaper to manufacter it is just not going to happen in the U.S..

  121. I certainly hope the Boxer Diesel makes it to North America (USA included). I've been reading up on the boxer diesel engine and I've been more than impressed. With more torque than the gasoline engine, better fuel economy and the same benefits the boxer engine provides, including lower centre of gravity and better handling, why they're waiting for the "ok" to import is beyond my comprehension. If they want to know how it'll fare in this country, how about letting us drive the car! You never know unless you try.

    ReplyDelete
  122. Talked to a Subaru Dealership Manager who attended a resent Subaru tech meeting. The reason no one has the answer why and when the diesel will arrive in the USA is that Subaru has already made the determination not to bring it to the USA. It was never intended for our market. The whole thing about bringing it to the USA any tim soon is just a rumor and nothing more. The good news is that Mahindra is bringing a tried and true diesel truck line to the USA in the spring. You will have to add urea every 10k miles but thats a minor inconvenience. It will come as a 2 or 4 dr 1.2 ton midsize pickup getting better than 30 mpg!! An SUV will follow later on. Prices to be in the 20k's. You will begin see these great trucks on the road very soon. It's a done deal.
Subaru and everyone else will follow suit depending on how well companies like Mahindra do over the next few years. If you want a Subie, Toyota, Honda etc Diesel then cast your vote buy buying a Mahindra first.

    ReplyDelete

  125. Bring back the Baja, put the diesel boxer in it, and I will buy one! Seriously, SUV's don't work for me, because I can't haul anything even slightly nasty without getting the interior trashed. A small pick up with enough room in the bed to fit a 4' wide piece of plywood, cab room for 4, and the boxer diesel, would sell like hotcakes and have no competition.

  127. My checkbook is open as soon as one is available. I'd prefer it in the Outback, but will buy a Forrester if that's the first one out! What can we do to convince Subaru that the market is here? MB has no idea what this market is like. Show them the 8 month wait list for VW Jetta TDI wagons?????

    ReplyDelete
  128. I would write the check today if Subaru could deliver the Forrester (or Outback) with a small diesel and CVT by next year. We need the automatic transmission for my wife, so that has to be there for us to replace either of the two '98 Outbacks. I really liked the CVT on the gasoline model we test drove. But I'd make the downpayment now and wait for the diesel!

    ReplyDelete
  129. Give me a delivery date and I am interesting in ordering one now!

    ReplyDelete
  130. Why is it taking so damn long for Subaru to sell the Boxer Diesel in this country?! Why should Europe, Australia and other countries have diesel powered cars and not us? That hardly seems fair. We've been patient for way too long. Why should we wait for the "market" to say it's ok, bring it on? We, your "loyal customers" are your market. Bring it into this country, now! I'll test drive one, automatic or (preferrably) manual shift.

    ReplyDelete
  131. VW is tearing the market apart with their TDI, but the damn car's interior is smaller than a hyundai elantra. Apparently, Subaru is too weak to compete against the superior German machine.

  132. I have a 2004 VW Jetta TDI wagon that I will be passing down to my daughter next year. I have averaged 43mpg over the last 150K miles. I have gotten 700+ miles on a single tank. The worst that I have ever gotten is 35mpg and the best has been 54mpg.

I like the new Forester... but I cannot justify going from 43mpg down to 23 or so. The boxer diesel would be the ticket for me.

If they do not think that diesel sells here, all they need to do is take a look and see how long a VW Jetta TDI sportwagon sits on the lot.

If they do not have the diesel by then, I will be forced to get another Jetta TDI Sportwagon... if I can find one.

    ReplyDelete
  133. Someone posted earlier about putting it in a truck. I'm tired of waiting for Ford to give us the four door diesel Ranger available elsewhere, bring back the Baja and put this engine in it. 144. I'm tired of waiting for Subaru to make a sensible move. Other options DO exist. Fiat is planning a diesel Jeep and Mahindra will probably get down and dirty to get market share, just like Hyundai did. If they offer a good enough warranty to offset new vehicle jitters, they'll do well. Subaru doesn't deserve the business that is being thrown at them if they continue to be so vague and misleading about their plans. At least the other companies are clear about the upcoming models we can expect from them. Apparently they have also noticed that Audi, Volkswagen and Mercedes are having no trouble selling diesels in this market. And VW/Audi's customers certainly aren't as utility and off-road oriented as the Subaru crowd.

Save your breath. Subaru isn't listening. Let Jeep know you're out there and want a reliable, efficient utility vehicle with enough torque to "get 'er done"

    ReplyDelete
  145. Subaru is blowing the opportunity of the decade.

Building & hyping a great new 4cyl. diesel, and then refusing to sell it to 75% of your existing customers... not the best way breed loyalty. Seems to me that Subaru is engaged in an anti-loyalty program... following Detroit to the graveyard.

BTW, VW has sold-out every TDI brought into the US since 1998. Sold. Out. Not sure where this myth about the diesel-hating US market comes from... real sales statistics seem to indicate that the US can't enough diesels. The data is overwhelmingly pro-diesel, actually.

It seems Subaru is acting stupidly.

P.S. diesel is easy to hop up. I'd bet you can easliy get a safe 40hp more out of these with good MPG to boot. My TDI dyno'd 138 at the wheels and 248tq 240,000 miles ago and still have only replaced the water pump! Used to get 50+ mpg, but has dropped to about 46 now with age. To those who claimed it was just a rumor, do your research before you spout off. Fuji Heavy has said they would bring the diesel here in two years. ({[but only if they could sell it in all 50 states.]}) Well, they can't, California HATES diesel. Anybody for a class action lawsuit against CARB for to dictating to the entire country what is available to buy? What happened to 'choice'? And Why does CARB get to tell me what I can buy? I don't live in California. I've never been to California. I have no plans to EVER visit that disgusting place! 173. I posted my interest and waited patiently in Calgary Canada for a 2011 Subaru Diesel. Time ran out, I tried, I really did, to buy another Subaru but had to go to VW to get a diesel. In 2 years I will be looking again. So how about it Subaru, are you listening?

Not only do you get better mileage and torque with diesel but you get more diesel fuel per barrel of oil than gas/petrol from the same barrel. You also don't need as much cracking and reforming to get it there in the refining process. It wins on both ends and competes head to head with some little gas/petrol city type cars. It is also unfortunate that the government taxes diesel more per L than gas/petrol. I wonder what would happen if the tax regime were leveled?

  174. We currently have a Jetta Sportwagen TDI and love it. Would like to have an all wheel drive diesel to replace our Ford Escape Hybrid. The hybrid does okay in town in mild weather, but is horrible in cold weather 11 MPG and only fair in hot weather 21 MPG. Our TDI get 35 city 40+ hwy no matter the weather. Unfortunately VW doesn't have an AWD TDI in the U.S. so we are hoping Subaru will bring a diesel over here.

  175. we will buy a forester diesel here in WA state as soon as available. we rented a Citroen Diesel when in France earlier this year that got about 65 PG (after doing ther conversion from Liters/KM to Gallons/Mile). Phenomenal performance.

Why are we so stupid here in America..

    ReplyDelete
  176. That is 65 MPG not 65 PG...

  177. This would be very popular in certain markets. MAybe a trial in Ithaca NY.

  178. OK... BACK to LESSON #1 children:

    1) Listen to what the consumer wants.
(AWD with GOOD mileage and LOW maintenance.)
    2) Design that product.
    3) Sell

    Simple!

  179. Myself, I do not recommend VW--a rotten company from the top down and back up. I have owned two VW diesels--great engine, lousy and unreliable everything else. I think the Subaru diesel would need an automatic option for the US market, but I have no doubt that it will be as fine a car as my 2004 Forester.

  180. I find that Subaru owners are similar socially to the Audi/VW set, and that Subaru Of America is missing out greatly on the diesel interest market......and missing out on...$ale$$$

  181. I would love a diesel subi...grew up in Maine, went to school in VT, transplant to Seattle...Everyone back east in New England and out here in the NW drives Subis...they are solid, safe and have great boxer engines(same type as a Porsche should say something about the design). Even the gas engine gets oc MPG considering the fairly high weight and AWD. When my wife and I bought our new car in 2004 we basically narrowed it to 4 models, the 2004 Jetta TDI wagon, a used A4 Avant with quattro, a 04 outback sport, or an 04 Legacy Outback...it was a tough decision but the Audi was too expensive and hard to find, the Outback Sport was too small and we opted for the great MPG over the AWD. That said the Jetta is a great car, though we've had a few electrical problems and one turbo boost hose that blew out. Mpg is generally between 38 and 42 depending on driving conditions and it is pretty good in the snow especially with snow tires. If Subarue offers an AWD/ Diesel combo with a 6 spd mani or continuasly variable transmission, I'd sell the Jetta and buy one in a heartbeat. I still would take diesel over gas and AWD, but if I could get hte best of both worlds, diesel and AWD I would...what kills me is I could get an AWD TDI VW in europe but not here...other than the Toureg which is just too pricey for me....PLEASE BRING IN THE TDI SUBIES!

  182. Mazda, Honda, Subaru, Toyota, Misubishi diesel
Come on, bring them to US/Canada. We are ready...
Don't listen to those Bosch German's report since they want to confuse you. Why don't you big 5 do yourself a favour, conduct a consumer survey. Or just look at VW diesel sales in the last 5 years.
VW TDI win big in North Ameriaca market.

  183. Gave up waiting for Subaru to deliver the diesel! I sold my 2005 Forester and bought a 2011 VW Sportwagen TDI; the 44 mpg at 70 mph on cruise is great, but I miss the AWD, ground clearance and visibility. Maybe it will happen in 2012 or 2013.

  184. Could not wait and be jerked around by Subaru. Purchased a Jetta TDI. ANOTHER SALE LOST - SUBARU ! ! ! ! ! AMF!

  185. By the time Subaru decide to introduce Diesel to North America, VW will be offering Diesel Hybrid :-)

  186. Just clocked up 15000 klm's in my Forester diesel in Australia. For drivers that enjoy driving this surely is the vehicle to get. So much fun with great economy to boot. What's all this crap about diesels being dirty? With all the anti pollution stuff on this vehicle, the exhaust gases are probably cleaner than the air going into the bloody motor.!!!! Smells better anyway. Tell the boffins in California to get a life and let these wonderful forester diesels into USA.!!!!

  187. Like so many if these people I've been waiting for Subaru to bring these Diesels to the states since I saw the initial run of the Legacy and eventual Forester models in Germany while living there back in 06-07 model year. It pains me to see them for sale over there and not here. The market couldn't be more primed now then ever and there is such a fan base for Subaru it just doesn't make any sense to me why any Subaru exec would be worried about offering possibly the most anticipated vehicle in the entire line-up. It's the perfect match for Subaru in every way. Outdoor/Green/Performance/Practicality/Functionality/Price??most likely/ and overall package. I bought an 07' Mercedes R320 CDI and loved that car to death but the cost of ownership and the lower ride hight eventually made it not as practical to own as our 04 Outback Sport so I sold it. I would put my name on a waiting list to get the Diesel the second corporate announced it was coming to showrooms somewhere across the U.S. The U.S NEEDS AN ALTERNATIVE AWD DIESEL TO THE LUXURY COMPANIES AND NOW IS BETTER THAN EVER. FORGET THE COST OF DIESEL BEING HIGHER. IT'S STILL A WAY BETTER BUY THAN ANYTHING COMPARABLE AFTER PUTTING TWICE THE MILEAGE ON ONE TANK OF FUEL!!

  188. Why wait ?? I'm want the diesel NOW! My 2 Subarus are getting worn out.

  189. Just clocked up 22,000 klm's in 9 months on my diesel Forester and no worries to date. I just love it to death. No visible exhaust gases and just a little exhaust smell which is a pity 'cos I love the aroma of diesel. Guess those days are over thanks to the greenies getting their way!!! Going up to Lake Eyre, Australia, next week which will be a good test for it in the desert.

  190. I have a 2009 Forester; great vehicle, but I'd also love a little better fuel economy. The platform is due for a dramatic "redo" in two years, and I suspect we'll get the CVT transmission, but no diesel. I'm holding on until then, with my fingers crossed for the diesel.

  191. The suits at Subaru are brain dead. VW has no competition, I have owned 4 VW oil burners and only one STI. (still have it and love it)
love the all wheel drive in the STI and would like to get the wify one, but?????
oh all we own are Manuel transmissions.
not sure if there is any hope??
