2009 Subaru Forester XT

The Bulge. From the driver's seat, it makes the new Forester 2.5XT hood appear pregnant with added power. To the stopwatch, it's just one piece of the mechanical puzzle that drops the 0-to-60 time by a third, from 9.9 seconds to 6.6. The rest of the puzzle includes a new twin-scroll turbocharger, larger valves, a bigger intercooler-sum it all up you've got 224 horsepower. Which is, uh, exactly the same as the previous turbo engine. What gives?

Subaru's goal with the XT wasn't greater power, but achieving its power and torque peaks at significantly lower rpm. The horsepower max arrives 400 rpm sooner; the torque's, at 800 fewer revs. That's a chunk that helps not only driveability but efficiency, too, what with less internal friction to sap off steam. Moreover, the twin-scroll design makes it a turbo that doesn't feel like a turbo; there's nearly no slingshotiness to contend with here.

The greater grunt trims the XT's figure-eight time by a noticeable 0.7 second. But the more robust entry into the cornering zones (plus a whopping 8.9 inches of ground clearance) also highlights the softness of the turbo Forester's suspension-it lists more than you'd expect, though if you're willing to shuffle the wheel a bit the XT can be delightfully chuckable. Something you can't say about many genuine all-roaders.

2010 Subaru Legacy

TOKYO — Mid-2009 signals the 20th anniversary of the Subaru Legacy. So what better time to unveil the next-generation model? Slated for a June 2009 launch, the fifth-generation Legacy will take its predecessor's exterior and add a larger grille, sharper up-slanting headlights, flared fenders and stronger edges all round.

Bob Baker Subaru says, "It'll employ significant cosmetic modifications, but you'll still be able to tell that it's a Legacy. But this time, opinions on its exterior looks will no doubt be divided."
Expected to sit on an almost identically sized platform as the current model, the new lineup will include the Legacy and Outback.

The future Legacy will be powered by newly developed 2.0-liter and 2.5-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder engines, with one source saying that the six-cylinder 3.0-liter will be axed in lieu of improved emissions and fuel efficiency.

Our source also indicates that the construction of Subaru's recently launched boxer diesel engine (in Europe) has influenced company engineers to employ similar techniques in maximizing the new gas engine's design by incorporating an alloy cylinder block, which features a significantly reduced block length and longer stroke action. Such construction also allows for weight reduction and the ability to lower the engine's center of gravity even further.

The 2.0-liter naturally aspirated unit is expected to generate 200 horsepower while the 2.5-liter turbo model will produce over 300 hp. In order to reduce emissions and improve fuel efficiency, two notoriously weak areas for Subaru, engineers are working on a continuously variable transmission in addition to the standard five-speed automatic.

With the 3.0-liter model discarded, we have it on good authority that Subaru is seriously considering adding a hot Legacy STI to the mix further down the road — a sedan destined to get a turbocharged version of the company's current 3.7-liter engine that will reportedly pump out upwards of 430 hp.

2009 Subaru Impreza

The 2009 Subaru Impreza lineup is revised, and the sporty WRX gets more power. Impreza comes as a 4-door sedan or 4-door hatchback. Trim levels include base 2.5i, SUV-flavored Outback Sport, 2.5GT, and performance-oriented WRX and WRX STi. The 2.5i, 2.5GT, and WRX are offered in both body styles; the Outback Sport and WRX STi come only in hatchback form. All models have all-wheel drive and a 2.5-liter horizontally opposed 4-cylinder engine. The 2.5i and Outback Sport have 170 hp. All other Impreza models are turbocharged. • "The Legacy has All Wheel Drive to maximize traction under poor conditions, especially in ice and snow. The Camry doesn't offer All Wheel Drive."

• For its top level performance in frontal, side and rear impact tests, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety rates the Legacy Sedan as a “Gold” Top Safety Pick, its highest rating, granted to only 11 vehicles tested by the IIHS. The Camry doesn’t qualify for either a Gold or Silver rating.

• The Subaru Legacy comes with free roadside assistance for 3 years 36,000 miles. Subaru will send help if you run out of gas, need a jump start, lock your keys in or need any assistance on the road. Toyota doesn’t give free roadside assistance for the Camry.

• To improve comfort and visibility, the Subaru Legacy has standard pull-out visor extensions that block glare better. The Camry doesn’t offer extendable visors.

Current 2009 Subaru Outback

The current five-passenger Subaru Outback is only available as a station wagon. There are several trim levels: the base-level Outback, 2.5i, 2.5i L.L. Bean and 2.5i Limited, the 2.5 XT Limited and the 3.0 R L.L. Bean.For power, 2.5i trim levels have a 2.5-liter horizontally opposed four-cylinder engine that makes 170 horsepower. The XT level upgrades to a 2.5-liter turbocharged engine with 243 hp and 241 pound-feet of torque. The 3.0 R model comes with a 3.0-liter horizontally opposed six-cylinder (H6) good for 245 hp and 215 lb-ft of torque.All Outbacks come standard with all-wheel drive. Models with either of the 2.5-liter engines can be equipped with a five-speed manual transmission. A four-speed automatic is available on 2.5i models, while 2.5 XT models get a five-speed auto. The 2.5i Limited models are four-speed automatic only, and the H6 only comes with the five-speed automatic.In reviews, this Subaru Outback has received praise for its standard all-wheel drive, long list of features, above-average build quality and balanced ride and handling dynamics. And while it doesn't quite have the off-road capabilities of a true SUV, the Outback can take on light-duty terrain without complaint.

Interior

2009 Subaru Outback The Outbacks have comfortable, versatile cabins. The front seats in the base model are comfortable, but not cushy, upholstered in a durable fabric that's reasonably grippy, more so than the leather in the Limited models. Rear seats are bolstered about the same as the fronts, with a minimal rise in the center in recognition of the driveline hump. The leather in the Limited had a thick feel, but it is richly surfaced. The front seats in the XT and more expensive models have fuller bolsters and better overall support; the lumbar adjustments can be set from very soft to accommodate sensitive lower backs, to very aggressive to brace a classic ramrod spine. Bottom cushions are deeper than many, but they could offer more thigh support. The perforated leather insets in premium models add some grip that is lacking in the smooth-finished leather and allow a small amount of air flow that's refreshing on hot and cold days. The dash is topped with high-quality, seamless vinyl, mildly textured and finished in a low-gloss to minimize reflected glare in the windshield. The instruments are rimmed in black four-cylinder cars and chrome in the 3.0 R. Gauges are large and round, positioned directly in front of the driver and easy to scan through the three-spoke steering wheel. Cruise controls on lower models are contained in a stubby stalk attached to the steering wheel at about the 4 o'clock position; on the spokes on higher trims.

In the upper half of the dash to the left of the gauges are two vents, one small for defogging the driver's window, the other large, with four-way directional vanes and a roller knob that varies the air flow from full to off. Below these are controls for dash light intensity (at any time on the electroluminescent XT and 3.0R), outside mirror adjustment and remote gas filler cover and a small storage bin. At the opposite end of the dash, matching vents fulfill the same functions. The center stack and forward portion of the center console are covered in an understated metallic-look, matte-finish plastic with chrome-like accents; woodgrain flanks the pillar on pricier models. Two large air vents at the top of the center stack flank a large storage bin with retracting cover.

Summary

2009 Subaru Outback The Subaru Outback is roomy and comfortable and can go almost anywhere. It's not the least expensive vehicle in its category, but it offers premium drivetrain technology, lots of safety features, and composed handling and all-weather composed handling and all-weather capability.

Subaru Forester Named Motor Trend Small SUV Of The Year!

DETROIT (AP) -- Motor Trend magazine has picked the 2009 Subaru Forester as its sport utility vehicle of the year, citing its fuel efficiency, comfort on the road and competency off the pavement.The award, announced Thursday, came from a field of 13 finalists mostly made up of car-based crossover vehicles, with few traditional body-on-frame truck-based SUVS as in previous years. It will be featured in the magazine's edition that hits newsstands on Nov. 3."The Forester's strengths are its value, versatile powertrains and fuel efficiency -- something that during these times is a gigantic plus," magazine editor-in-chief Angus MacKenzie said in a statement.The all-wheel-drive Subaru Forester with a 2.5-liter, four-cylinder engine with an automatic transmission gets an estimated 20 miles per gallon in city driving and 26 on the highway.

Without a doubt, the majority of Subaru Forester shoppers are going to do a little jig when they see the greater capacity. But, oh boy, will there be dissenters among the traditional Foresteristas (I already know one) who are going to wail at the growth spurt. Subaru can happy-talk all it likes about better departure angles, greater ground clearance (now 8.7 inches for the normally aspirated version, 8.9 for the turbo), and even a five-inch-tighter turning circle. But some fraction of the hard-nut die hards are going to cross their arms and say no, no, no. In addition to its gained length and width (1.8 inches fatter), it's taller by a whopping 4.3 inches. Why? Many of the Subaru Forester forum-types are asking the same thing. Probably to keep its visual proportions 'ute-like instead of going all wagonish; inside, there's so much empty air above your head the FAA might have jurisdiction. Even with the gigantic (optional) retracting moonroof in the closed position, there's space for a nice aviary overhead. The downside of this could be a higher center of gravity despite the drivetrain's fractional lowering. Of note, all Subaru Foresters now have stability control, brake assist, and tip sensing to trigger the curtain bags, in addition the all the usual tricks like hill-hold for the manual-transmission cars and electronic brake force sensing.

On our test drive, I found myself appreciating all of these viewpoints: The greater length, stretched wheelbase, and new double A-arm rear suspension (rubber isolated) give the Forester an absolutely splendid (as well as quieter) ride. Even off road, the darn thing wafts you along like a glass of expensive champagne on butler-carried tray. But you do become aware of its puffed dimensions when you turn it. Its rotational inertia, or resistance to changing direction, is greater, if only by a hairsbreadth. True, the proverbial 99 out of 100 savvy drivers probably won't notice any difference at all. And the good news is that the Subaru Forester's always delightful steering feel is still a tiny rim-tug away.

On the road, the broad-shoulder torque curves of both engines nicely balance the Forester's roughly 100 pound weight gain (which, by the way, is not a bad increase considering the dimensional upscaling). The four-speed automatic is an obvious anachronism -- and wouldn't it be nice if the turbo version could break its dependence on premium fuel (as has accomplished with its naturally-aspirated 3.6-liter H-6 engine)? Oh, yes. Still, in the face of quickly escalating fuel prices, Subaru is probably wise to avoid the ever-more-horsepower mania; in fact, in normally aspirated, automatic transmission form, mileage is unchanged, while only a single solitary mpg is sacrificed on the highway if you opt for the auto. Also unchanged are turbo version's numbers, though -- note to all you manual cog swappers out there -- the turbo/manual tranny pairing has been discontinued with this engine.
