2010 Subaru Legacy Both Bold And Refined

The 2010 Subaru Legacy Is Both Bold and Refined Subaru totally redesigns and refines the Legacy for 2010.
The all-new 2010 Subaru Legacy is freshly made over and ready to roll. There’s a lot to love about this midsized four-wheel drive sedan, from its exquisitely styled exterior to its updated and expanded interior, not to mention its choice of fuel-efficient, powerful engines, smooth transmissions and so many enjoyable amenities.

The 2010 Subaru Legacy is a capable four-door with seating for five, providing a sporty and dynamic ride in the comforting surroundings of a roomier cabin, full of style and convenience. The new Legacy even gets some classy new wheels. With an MSRP starting at just $19,995, it’s an impressive package.

The 2010 Subaru Legacy comes to you in eight trims, each named for its engine and level of standard features. The 2010 Legacy has a lot to offer, starting with a choice of three engines and just as many transmissions. Trims include the base model 2.5i, 2.5i Premium, 2.5i Limited, 2.5GT Premium, 2.5GT Limited, 3.6R, 3.6R Premium and 3.6R Limited. Imagine the possibilities!

Let’s take a look under the strikingly sculpted hood first. The 2.5i trims feature an enhanced, horizontally opposed, 2.5-liter four-cylinder BOXER engine paired with a brand new six-speed manual transmission in the 2.5i and 2.5i Premium trims. An available Lineartronic™ CVT transmission with paddleshifters is standard in the 2.5i Limited trim and available on the 2.5i and 2.5i Premium. The 2.5i engine produces 170 hp at 5,600 rpm and 170 lb/ft of torque at 4,000 rpm.

The 2.5GT trims get a boost from a DOHC 2.5-liter four-cylinder BOXER engine with an intercooled turbocharger coupled to a six-speed manual transmission. The powerplant develops 265 hp with 258 lb/ft of torque.

The 3.6R trims are powered by a 3.6-liter six-cylinder BOXER engine that produces 256 hp and 247 lb/ft of torque. The 3.6R trims shift gears with an electronically controlled five-speed automatic transmission with SPORTSHIFT manual mode.

The 2.5i model with Lineartronic™ CVT transmission received an excellent EPA-estimated fuel efficiency rating of 23 mpg city and 31 mpg highway. Trims with the six-speed manual transmission received an estimated fuel efficiency rating of 19 mpg city and 27 mpg highway.

The 2010 Subaru Legacy handles with ease and agility, owing to its always-ready Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive and a Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC) system for better traction and stability on the road. It also features an updated suspension and a new Hill Holder System, which holds the car when stopped on a hill until you accelerate.

When you see the 2010 Subaru Legacy face-to-face, you’ll immediately notice the curves and lines that dominate its streamlined body. Its smooth angular grille, nicely curved hood and sloping front headlights give it the look of a car on the move, even when it’s stopped. The hoods of the GT models feature a scoop, which aids in keeping the turbo cool. The 2010 Legacy is large and in charge, gaining inches on previous models in height, width and wheelbase while managing to keep its weight down.

The 2010 Legacy also gets fitted with several new wheel designs. The 2.5i gets 16-inch steel wheels while the 2.5i Premium sports 16-inch alloys and the 2.5i Limited and the 3.6R trims roll on 17-inch aluminum alloys. The GT trims boost up an inch to 18-inch alloys with performance grade tires.

Inside the 2010 Subaru Legacy is a cabin that is so spacious and amply supplied with amenities that you won’t want to leave it! The 2010 Legacy is roomier all around, adding nearly four inches of legroom in the rear alone. Cargo room expands, too, as the rear bench is foldable. The trunk offers 14.7 cubic feet of space. The interior is defined by its fine materials and updated look and features metallic accents and a well laid out dash and instrument panel. A trip computer display and an AM/FM/CD audio system with steering wheel-mounted cruise and audio controls are standard on all models.

The 2.5i Premium features an eight-way power driver’s seat and a leather-wrapped steering wheel for premium comfort. The 2.5 Limited goes all leather and all weather adding leather upholstery and an All Weather Package (perfect for the colder climes), automatic climate control and an upgraded audio system.

The 2.5GT Premium and 3.6R Premium trims add the same amenities as the 2.5i Premium plus the All Weather Package, which includes heated seats, a windshield wiper de-icer and heated side-view mirrors. The 2.5GT Limited and 3.6R Limited are given the same interior upgrades as the 2.5i Limited.
Impressive options for the up-level trims include a sunroof, as well as a GPS Navigation System Package with a backup camera for the Limited trims.

2010 Subaru Forester And Its Award-Winning Past.

How the 2010 Subaru Forester builds on its award-winning past.

The Subaru Forester has a lot to be proud of. In a heavily contested field, it became Motor Trend’s 2009 Sport/Utility of the Year™. What made this impressive SUV so desirable – safety, utility, comfort and performance – continues in the 2010 Forester.

Outside, the 2010 Subaru Outback is stylish, yet unassuming. What it lacks in bold, over-the-top design found in its larger counterparts, it more than makes up for in smart, modern appeal. Subaru’s upright, chrome grille paves the way for a simple, but undoubtedly sophisticated body structure. A wide stance is complemented by long, uninterrupted lines and soft, beveled paneling. Sculpted headlamps, chrome accents and a sleek profile portray a quiet refinement while an available hood scoop, 17-inch alloys and raised roof rails give Subaru’s award-winner a sense of capability and an underlying edge.

While other sport utes may opt to beat you over the head with flashy features and size-over-service builds, the 2010 Forester has been designed to walk the line between contemporary, urban appeal and confident off-road ability. It’s the vehicle that can go between the boardroom and kite boarding without missing a beat. Available power mirrors and a massive panoramic sunroof add a layer of fun and functionality to this crossover.

Beneath the hood, the 2010 Forester features a choice of two supremely capable and surprisingly efficient engines. Forester’s 2.5X models feature the strong performance of an aluminum 2.5-liter 16-valve SOHC BOXER engine capable of 170 hp through a standard five-speed manual or optional four-speed automatic transmission. Smooth and fluid, Subaru’s base powerplant features class-leading 26 mpg highway fuel efficiency ratings.

The 2.5XT models incorporate an available 2.5-liter intercooled, turbocharged DOHC BOXER engine that generates an impressive 224 hp through a smooth-shifting four-speed automatic transmission. Extremely capable and surprisingly exhilarating, Subaru’s turbocharged engine maintains exceptional and intelligent efficiency while delivering an eminently enjoyable driving experience.

Both engines and all Foresters feature the comfort and confidence of Subaru’s advanced Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive System, which monitors wheel spin and provides additional power to wheels with traction in order to maintain optimal footing and handling on difficult terrain. Traction and stability control systems have been combined into one, dubbed the Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC) system, which senses a loss in vehicle stability (particularly around corners) and automatically and appropriately delivers engine power or brakeforce to help you stay in control of the vehicle at all times. Four-wheel antilock brakes and an independent suspension system ensure exceptional stopping power and a remarkably smooth ride.

Inside, the 2010 Forester is more of the comfort and functionality that makes this vehicle so impressive. Draped in available soft, comfortable leather, and highlighted by aluminum trim and expert craftsmanship, the cabin of the 2010 Forester is quite luxurious. Heated power seats are situated in front of a well-appointed and conveniently designed dash complete with stylish gauges and instruments and a leather-wrapped steering wheel with mounted audio controls. Folding seats and a massive rear cargo area ensure dynamic versatility and functionality.

The center stack houses an available six-speaker enhanced audio system with easy iPod integration and satellite radio capability, as well as climate controls. An available navigation system features an in-dash seven-inch high-resolution color touchscreen with Bluetooth wireless connectivity.

When it comes to safety, the 2010 Forester doesn’t disappoint. Advanced control and braking systems are joined by a reinforced frame, active head restraints, six standard airbags and more to ensure that the Forester tops its class.

The 2010 Subaru Forester is the most affordable SUV in its class with a starting MSRP of just $20,295.

2010 Subaru Legacy 2.5 GT

Subaru of America, Inc. announced that the all-new 2010 Subaru Legacy sedan will debut at the 2009 New York International Auto Show, providing a bolder design language in a larger midsize package. The 2010 Subaru Legacy, whose predecessor is renowned for its sporty handling and reliability, now features a longer wheelbase, almost four inches of extra rear seat legroom and a new powertrain lineup featuring the new Subaru Lineartronic™ CVT (continuously variable transmission).

The 2010 Subaru Legacy is built on a new platform that increases room and comfort while preserving the agility and fun-to-drive spirit of the previous model. New powertrains and new suspension design combine with proven Subaru safety technology to deliver a unique offering in the midsize segment. As are all Subaru models, every Subaru Legacy is equipped as standard with Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, an invaluable performance- and safety-enhancing system that sets Subaru Legacy apart among midsize sedans. All-wheel drive is rare in the midsize segment, and only Subaru Legacy makes it standard.
The Subaru Legacy line for 2010 will offer three levels of performance. Legacy 2.5i models -- 2.5i, 2.5i Premium and 2.5i Limited -- are powered by a revised 170-hp 2.5-liter 4-cylinder Boxer engine (with available PZEV rating) and equipped with a new standard 6-speed manual transmission or the new Lineartronic™ CVT. Both transmissions help to improve acceleration, response and fuel economy.
The Subaru Legacy 2.5GT models make a leap in performance for 2010. Both the 2.5GT Premium and 2.5GT Limited models are powered by a new 265-hp turbocharged / intercooled Boxer engine. The new engine features a unique turbocharger that is mounted below the engine. This new location not only contributes to smooth turbocharger response and improved emissions, but also lowers the car's center of gravity. In the Legacy 2.5GT models, this high-performance engine is mated with a new 6-speed manual transmission. Designed for the discerning enthusiast, the Subaru Legacy 2.5GT models are equipped to challenge some of the best names in the sport sedan field.

Three new Subaru Legacy 3.6R models - the 3.6R, 3.6R Premium and 3.6R Limited - offer a sophisticated blend of performance and comfort. All are powered by a new 256-hp 3.6-liter 6-cylinder Boxer engine matched to a 5-speed electronic automatic transmission. Compared to the 3.0-liter 6-cylinder engine it replaces, the more powerful 3.6 has the same external size and uses regular-grade fuel, rather than premium as the 3.0 required.
Bold Design Statement in the Midsize Arena
The 2010 Legacy, while rivaling midsize segment leaders in roominess, stands apart with a bold, high-tech look. The Subaru badge centers the new grille, which features a squared off lower edge. Character lines arc from the grille and form power bulges on the hood and taper off into the A-pillar. The sleek silhouette incorporates a larger greenhouse, and a shorter deck gives the vehicle a sporty look. Powerful wheel arches echo the power running through the Symmetrical AWD System. A range of new wheel cover- and alloy-wheel designs also debut on the 2010 Legacy, with the 2.5GT models featuring 18-in. alloy wheels and low-profile tires. A functional hood scoop directs air to the engine-mounted intercooler.

Besting Midsize Benchmarks
Built on an all-new platform, the 2010 Subaru Legacy offers roominess comparable to mainstream midsize sedans, with a focus on usable space and long-distance driving comfort. The wheelbase grows to 108.3-in., a 3.2-in. increase over the previous Subaru Legacy. The 2010 Legacy provides nearly four inches of additional rear legroom, which is enhanced by the scalloped back design of the new front seats.

The new Subaru Legacy is 3.2-in. higher and 3.6-in. wider than the previous model, yielding gains in head, shoulder and hip room. The 2010 Legacy offers more total passenger room (103 cu. ft.) than many competitors. The new-generation Subaru Legacy also offers one of the largest trunks (14.7 cu. ft.) in the segment - a significant achievement considering that the car's design requires packaging a rear differential and drive axles.
Overall vehicle length is up by just 1.4-in. (now 186.4 in.), but overhang dimensions are reduced compared with the previous model.
The 2010 Subaru Legacy interior is not only more spacious than before, but takes another step up in refinement from an already-praised design in the previous model. The sporty four-dial instrument panel is augmented in all Subaru Legacy models by a multi-information display with trip computer located in the center of the dashboard. Richer looking appointments and details abound, including a sporty 3-spoke steering wheel (leather-wrapped in all but the base 2.5i). A new electronic parking brake - with an electronic Hill Holder System -- eliminates the traditional parking brake handle, freeing up space in the center console.

Confident, Agile Handling and Safety for any Road ... or any Weather
The new Subaru Legacy improves crash-worthiness and provides a stiffer platform for a smoother, quieter ride - but retains the crisp handling and balance Subarus are known for. Legacy 2.5i and 2.5i Premium models feature 16-in. wheels (alloy on Premium); the 2.5GT models are exclusively equipped with 18-in. alloy wheels with 225/45R18 tires. The 6-cylinder Subaru Legacy 3.6R models have 17-in. alloy wheels with 225/50R17 tires.

All Subaru Legacy models for 2010 are equipped as standard with Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC), which combines stability and traction control capability. All 2010 Subaru Legacy models are equipped with a standard 4-wheel disc Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) with Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD). Additionally, Subaru's Brake Assist safety system is available on all models.

MacPherson-type strut front suspension is mounted to a new engine cradle, and the engine is attached to the cradle using new hydraulic mounts. The new cradle uses high-strength steel and is designed to also enhance frontal crash protection. A new double-wishbone rear suspension, mounted to a sub frame, replaces the previous multi-link configuration to provide improved ride, stability and handling. The enhancement of body rigidity and the new suspension design help to reduce levels of noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH). Increased wheel travel and optimized suspension geometry also contribute to improved ride comfort.

New Level of Comfort and Convenience in All Models
Standard comfort and available amenities are increased across the Subaru Legacy line for 2010. The base 2.5i model, for example, features standard steering wheel audio and cruise control buttons, a 60/40 split fold-down rear seat, new electronic parking brake, automatic lights-on function, ambient overhead console lighting and an available iPod jack. The all-new electronic Hill Holder System holds the vehicle in place until the driver applies the throttle to pull away from a stop. Previous versions of this system only held the car for a few seconds.

Subaru Legacy Premium models add more amenities, including an 8-way power driver's seat with power lumbar support adjustment and driver's auto up/down window. The Premium models also offer additional comfort and convenience options, including a harman-kardon® audio system, a power moonroof, and the All-Weather Package that adds heated front seats and mirrors and a windshield wiper de-icer.

The Subaru Legacy Limited models feature leather upholstery, dual zone automatic climate control and a 4-way power front passenger seat. The Limited models exclusively offer an available voice-activated GPS navigation system with an 8-in. LCD display and rear-view backup camera, hands-free Bluetooth® connectivity and streaming Bluetooth audio.
Revised 2.5-liter Boxer Engine with New 6-Speed Manual or CVT
The 2010 Subaru Legacy 2.5i models are powered by a revised 2.5-liter 4-cylinder Boxer engine, teamed for the first time to a new 6-speed manual transmission or the available new Lineartronic™ CVT. The CVT is standard in the Legacy 2.5i Limited, where it is also equipped with a manual mode and steering wheel paddle shifters.

The 2.5-liter engine, which is available as PZEV-certified, is modified for 2010 to improve performance, responsiveness, and economy. The engine delivers 170 horsepower @ 5,600 rpm and 170 lb.-ft. of peak torque @ 4,000 rpm. The i-Active Valve Lift System (AVLS) ensures a broad torque curve and smooth response at all engine speeds, while also helping to improve fuel efficiency. All Subaru Legacy models for 2010 feature a larger fuel tank, now 18.5 gallons vs. 16.9 gallons in the previous model, to extend driving range.

Whether teamed to the new 6-speed manual transmission or the Lineartronic™ CVT, the roomier 2010 Legacy provides quicker acceleration and lower fuel consumption than comparable 2009 Subaru Legacy models. Either transmission helps make the Subaru Legacy more responsive in everyday driving.

Subaru has adopted a chain-type CVT, the world's first longitudinally mounted CVT system for AWD production vehicles. It employs smaller pulley cores, which helps make the unit compact and can help provide better fuel efficiency compared to belt-type CVTs. Unlike a conventional automatic transmission, which uses fixed gear ratios, a CVT provides infinite variability between the highest and lowest available ratios with no discernable steps or shifts. The CVT continuously and smoothly adapts to performance demand, helping to keep the engine in its most efficient operating range.

Because a CVT does not shift gears, the driver enjoys smoother performance in all driving situations. The selectable manual mode of the Lineartronic™ CVT uses six pre-selected steps to allow the driver to "shift" manually using steering wheel paddle controls.

Subaru Legacy 2.5GT: 265 Turbocharged Horses
The new-generation Legacy 2.5GT models get a significant boost in performance from the revised 2.5-liter turbocharged / intercooled engine (based on the Impreza WRX engine) teamed to a new standard 6-speed manual transmission. Notably, the new 6-speed is more than 50 pounds lighter than the 6-speed unit used in the 2009 Subaru Legacy 2.5GT spec.B.
A larger turbocharger increases boost, and a new exhaust uses a low-density catalyst for reduced backpressure. To improve weight distribution and help lower the center of gravity, the turbocharger is now mounted below the engine. With 265 horsepower and 258 lb.-ft. of peak torque (compared to 243 hp and 241 lb.-ft. in the previous 2.5GT models), the 2010 Subaru Legacy 2.5GT models can accelerate from zero to 60 mph in under six seconds.

3.6-liter H6 Engine: Premium Performance with Regular-Grade Fuel
The new 3.6-liter H6 engine replaces the previous 3.0-liter H6, yet features the same external dimensions thanks primarily to a unique shortened connecting rod design. As a result, this larger-displacement and more powerful engine maintains its excellent low center of gravity. The 3.6 Boxer engine produces 256 horsepower and 247 lb.-ft. of peak torque, compared to 245 hp and 215 lb.-ft. of torque for the previous 3.0-liter engine. Active Valve Control System (AVCS) variable valve timing on both the intake and exhaust valves optimizes power delivery across the engine's speed range while helping to reduce emissions.

Not only does the 3.6 engine offer greater performance than the previous 3.0-liter unit, but does so using regular-grade fuel compared to premium required in the 3.0. The specially tuned five-speed automatic transmission, combined with the greater torque output of the new engine, helps make the Subaru Legacy 3.6R models more responsive when driving in hilly areas by significantly reducing "hunting" between gears.

Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive A Key To Brand Identity
Subaru offers three different Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive systems in the 2010 Subaru Legacy line, each tailored to the engine and type of transmission. In Legacy 2.5i models equipped with the 6-speed manual transmission, the AWD system uses a viscous-coupling locking center differential to distribute power 50/50 front to rear. Slippage at either set of wheels will send more power to the opposite set.

Subaru Legacy 2.5i models equipped with the Lineartronic™ CVT use an electronically managed continuously variable transfer clutch to actively control power distribution in response to driving conditions.

Subaru Legacy 3.6R models exclusively feature advanced Variable Torque Distribution (VTD) All-Wheel Drive with a 5-speed automatic transmission. A planetary center differential works with an electronically controlled continuously variable hydraulic transfer clutch to manage power distribution. The VTD system normally sends more power to the rear wheels to enhance handling agility, and it continuously adjusts power distribution in response to driving and road conditions.

The Subaru Safety Story
The Subaru Legacy, like all Subaru models, has consistently earned top scores in government and insurance industry crash tests. The 2010 Legacy is designed to further raise the safety quotient. Subaru's Ring-Shaped Reinforcement Frame safety structure, proven over a decade in all Subaru models, again forms the foundation for crash protection and occupant safety in the new-generation 2010 Subaru Legacy. A new engine cradle design improves front impact safety, and the 2010 Legacy features greater use of high-strength steel.

The 2010 Subaru Legacy models include as standard equipment front seat side impact air bags and side curtain air bags that offer additional head protection for front and rear occupants. Intelligent dual-stage deployment front air bags use sensors to detect the presence and weight of a front passenger and also the driver's distance from the steering wheel. The system determines front air bag deployment strength for optimal occupant protection.

New in the 2010 Subaru Legacy, high-strength front seat frames provide enhanced protection against whiplash injury in a rear-end collision. With the entire seat optimized for a rear-end collision, Subaru replaced the previous active front head restraints with a more comfortable design.

Active All-Wheel Drive: WRX models utilize an electronically controlled variable transfer clutch to distribute power to where traction is needed. Sensors monitor parameters such as wheel slippage, throttle position and braking, to help determine torque distribution and direct it to the wheels with optimum traction. Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC) : VDC electronic stability control utilizes sensors which constantly monitor wheel speed, steering angle, brake pressure, vehicle yaw rate and lateral g-forces. If VDC detects a difference between the driver's intended path and the one the vehicle is actually taking, VDC applies braking power and/or reduces engine torque to help correct vehicle path. Traction Control System (TCS) : VDC also incorporates an all-wheel, all-speed traction control system which, when sensing a loss of traction, applies braking force and reduces engine torque to the slipping wheel or wheels as necessary to maintain vehicle motion.

Forester Diesel

Forester diesel headed to US in 2010

In early 2007 Subaru announced it is building a 2.2-liter flat-four turbodiesel engine, which will go on sale in Europe this year in Impreza and Forester models, but is not ready for the US. During the announcement of the engine at the 2007 Geneva Motor Show, Subaru indicated they had no plans to introduce the diesel to the US market.

Fuji Heavy Industries president Ikuo Mori says the U.S. is the most important market worldwide, and executive vice president of Subaru of America Tom Doll says “Forester owners enjoy long road trips”, begging the question of when the engine will be available in the US for the Forester and Impreza.

“We are preparing to launch the engine when the market is ready,” says Mori, “We have no comment on when that would be. The European market is ready now; I’m not sure when the US market will be.”

However, Mori says that regardless of the market condition, the engine will be introduced to the U.S. by midyear in 2010.

Mori says he thinks it will be very difficult for the U.S. to achieve the 15 percent diesel passenger car sales penetration by 2015, a figure that supplier Bosch as well as Mercedes-Benz and Audi have agreed with. Still, he added that Subaru will introduce the engine in the U.S. well before the US market reaches that level of diesel sales.

The New Subaru Forester Diesel

Available in three models, the Forester X, XC and XSN.

Step inside a Subaru Forester, and you’ll know. It was built with a commitment to On and Off-road vehicles, driven by the spirit of innovation. A focus on ingenuity that generates control and exhilaration. Design that appeals to the heart as well as the mind. All delivering an experience behind the wheel that is even more fulfilling than the destination.
This is not just another diesel evolution - this is a revolution. This is the world's first horizontally-opposed diesel engine to be featured in a passenger car. This is the SUBARU BOXER DIESEL. Mounted on the legendary Symmetrical AWD system, it benefits from the key characteristics of low-vibration and highly responsive acceleration. Boasting minimal inertia and friction with mountains of torque, this package changes all preconceptions you may have had of diesel engines. Its perfect balance and low centre of gravity will ensure you of an outstanding driving experience with unrivalled stability on every journey.

The boxer diesel is essentially an all-new engine, sharing its bore centers with Subaru's 3.0L gas six (to help reduce machining costs) but otherwise made mostly of unique parts. The twin-cam, four-cylinder mill displaces 2.0L, feeds off a common-rail fuel-delivery system, and breathes via 16 valves and a variable-nozzle turbo. Output is 145 hp at 3600 rpm but the engine makes a manly 258 lb-ft of torque at just 1800 rpm (compared with 226 lb-ft for the Forester's 2.0L turbo gas engine).

Subaru notes several advantages to the boxer's design. Most important, the horizontally opposed configuration is naturally balanced, requiring no weight- and friction-increasing counter-rotating shafts for smooth spinning. The engine is extremely compact, thanks to a bore pitch reduced 6mm over the 2.0L gas engine. An aluminum block minimizes weight, while a low-mounted turbocharger helps drop the car's center of gravity. The engine also wears a diesel particulate filter (DPF), a closed silicon-fiber honeycomb that traps particulate matter as it passes through the exhaust.

Mated to the new engine is a new six-speed manual transmission designed especially for the boxer diesel. Subaru currently has no automatic capable of handling the diesel's lofty torque output, and given the relatively low volumes anticipated for the diesel the company isn't inclined to spend big bucks on creating a new one. Expect the manual to be the one and only transmission offering when (if?) the Forester diesel eventually makes its stateside debut.

Official EPA fuel economy figures of course aren't yet available, but in Europe the Forester 2.0D is rated at an amazing 37 mpg city/highway combined. If you're a driver who likes to pour on the miles, here's your rig: With its 16.9-gallon fuel tank, the 2.0D has a range of more than 600 miles. Got a boat or a trailer? No problem. With the tank-like boxer-diesel, the Forester 2.0D can tow up to 4400 lb (compared with just 2400 lb for the gasoline-drinking, turbo 2.5L four in the Forester XT).

The engine lights off with a pushbutton starter and settles into a subdued clatter. You know right away it's a diesel, but the sound from beneath the hood isn't intrusive. Pull away from a stop and in a blink the turbo spools up and you're surging ahead. This isn't a quick car by any means: Subaru claims a 0-to-62-mph time of 10.4 seconds. Instead, think "stout." On an incline, the diesel powers up without fuss or undue shifting. On the autobahn, it hovered along at 90 mph with a refined thrum.
